Bustos Applauds House Passage of the Equality Act

Today, Congresswoman Cheri Bustos (IL-17) released the following statement after H.R. 5, the Equality Act, passed the U.S. House of Representatives:

"Today, I was proud to vote in favor of the Equality Act -- along with our entire Democratic Caucus -- because we must eradicate discrimination of all kinds. Nobody should be fired from their job or evicted from their home because of who they love. Every American and Illinoisan deserves fairness under the law and is entitled to the same set of civil rights protections -- regardless of their sex, sexual orientation or gender identity."

BACKGROUND

The Equality Act will ensure LGBTQ Americans are fully protected under federal civil rights laws. Specifically, it focuses on discrimination protections related to employment, housing, education, access to credit, jury service, federal funding and public accommodations. This legislation clarifies that sex includes both sexual orientation and gender identity by amending the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Civil Service Reform Act of 1978, the Government Employee Rights Act of 1991, the Congressional Accountability Act of 1995, the Fair Housing Act, the Equal Credit Opportunity Act and the Jury Selections and Services Act.
