Blunt Hails HHS Announcement on Fetal Tissue Research

U.S. Senator Roy Blunt (Mo.), Chairman of the Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education and Related Agencies, today commended the Department of Health and Human Services' announcement that it will discontinue the use of human fetal tissue from elective abortions in federally-controlled research.

"Today's action is a significant pro-life victory. The Trump administration has taken this issue and the dignity of human life seriously. The National Institutes of Health has directed funding toward the development of alternative research methods that do not rely on human fetal tissue from elective abortions and I remain supportive of that effort. Moving forward, I will work with NIH to make sure the ethics board will scrutinize future research proposals according to ethical safeguards. Taxpayer-funded research must be held to the highest ethical standards and this is an important step in the right direction."
