Tackling the rise in child abuse

Statement

Date: May 11, 2019
Location: Washington, DC

On Wednesday, we approved the Stronger Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act in the Education and Labor Committee. The bill reauthorizes federal funding for child protective services, community-based prevention efforts, and research. And it supports development of best practices for reducing rates of child abuse and neglect linked to parent substance use disorders. States and territories will be better able to address the recent rise in child abuse and neglect with the doubling of formula grant funding in the bill. The Marianas received $260,000 in CAPTA grants in fiscal 2018.
