Press Release

Date: April 1, 2019
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Alcee L. Hastings (D-FL) released the following statement after being appointed as Chairman of the Subcommittee on Legislative and Budget Process on the House Rules Committee. Hastings currently serves as Vice Chairman of the Committee:

"As Chairman of the Subcommittee on Legislative and Budget Process, I will focus on matters associated with Congress and Executive Branch relations, such as the budget process. I look forward to working with Chairman McGovern, as well as my fellow colleagues on the Committee in implementing a fair and democratic process that helps restore integrity to the House of Representatives. Last Congress, we saw the most closed Congress in the history of our country. I applaud Chairman McGovern's focus on an open and transparent process, and look forward to playing an active role, so that we can better work on behalf of the American people," said Hastings.

BACKGROUND:

The Subcommittee on Legislative and Budget Process has general responsibility for measures or matters within the Rules Committee's jurisdiction related to relations between the Congress and the Executive Branch -- most notably, the budget process. The legislation falling within the panel's jurisdiction includes resolutions and bills referred at the discretion of the Chair, and budget process-related provisions included within various major budget-related statutes including, for example, the Congressional Budget Act. In the past, the Subcommittee has held hearings on earmarks and biennial budgeting.

Congressman Alcee L. Hastings serves as Vice-Chairman of the House Rules Committee, Chairman of the U.S. Helsinki Commission, and Co-Chairman of the Florida Delegation.
