Collins, King Join Bipartisan Group in Introducing Legislation to Support Fishing Safety Programs

U.S. Senators Susan Collins (R-ME) and Angus King (I-ME) joined a bipartisan group of Senators in introducing the Funding Instruction for Safety, Health, and Security Avoids Fishing Emergencies (FISH SAFE) Act -- legislation that would restore the federal share of fishing safety training and research grants back to 75 percent, fixing the decrease to 50 percent created by the Frank LoBiondo Coast Guard Authorization Act of 2018. The FISH SAFE Act would also extend the two grant programs' authorizations through 2021.

"Fishing is an integral part of Maine's economy and heritage, but it is also one of the most dangerous industries for workers," said Senators Collins and King in a joint statement. "To help prevent tragedies at sea, this bipartisan bill would restore funding for critical programs that ensure our fishermen have the resources and training they need to do their jobs safely."

In addition to Senators Collins and King, the FISH SAFE Act was introduced by Senators Edward Markey (D-MA), Dan Sullivan (R-AK), Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), and Maggie Hassan (D-NH).
