Today, Congressman Kenny Marchant (R-TX) and Congresswoman Elaine Luria (D-VA) led the introduction of legislation to provide tax relief to children who have lost a parent serving in the military.

"When it became clear that military survivor benefits would be taxed as unearned income, my colleagues and I moved quickly to address the issue. This bill is the result of our dedication to Gold Star families and the need to ensure that families who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country can keep the full benefits they are due," said Congressman Marchant.

"I want to especially thank Congressman Marchant for his important work on this bill, and I encourage quick action so we can provide certainty to these families," said Rep. Kevin Brady (R-TX), Ranking Member on the House Ways and Means Committee.

Background:

Simplification of a special tax dating back to 1986 -- a tax that was intended to stop wealthy parents from sheltering income by shifting it to their children with lower tax rates -- inadvertently caused higher taxes on military survivor benefits. The new proposal will effectively remove these benefits from the special 1986 tax.
