Congresswoman Wexton on the Release of the Redacted Mueller Report

Statement

In response to Attorney General William Barr's press conference and release of the redacted Mueller Report, Congresswoman Jennifer Wexton issued the following statement:

"The Mueller investigation has already resulted in the public indictment of 34 individuals and three companies, seven guilty pleas, and one conviction following a jury trial--including the president's campaign advisor and national security advisor. After review of the heavily redacted report, it is clear that there is significant evidence of wrongdoing. Congress and the American people will need to hear from Robert Mueller in order to better understand his findings.

"This investigation also confirmed, unequivocally, that Russia interfered in the 2016 elections. This Administration has not taken the necessary steps to safeguard our democracy and our elections from future interference by foreign powers. Our national security must be a priority and the full unredacted report must be made available to Congress.

"As a former prosecutor, I am extremely concerned by Attorney General William Barr's actions. A press conference about the special counsel's report before it was made available to Congress or the American public was a transparent effort to run interference on behalf of the White House. It was overtly political and served only to further diminish the American people's trust in the independence of the Attorney General. AG Barr is demonstrating a pattern of behavior consistent with that of the president's defense attorney rather than the nation's top law enforcement official."
