Congressman Sires Statement on Yesterday's Meeting Between Democratic Leaders and President Trump on Infrastructure

Statement

Date: May 1, 2019
Location: Washington, DC

Today, Congressman Albio Sires (D-NJ) issued the following statement regarding yesterday's meeting between House and Senate Democratic leaders and President Trump on possible infrastructure legislation:

"President Trump has agreed to work with Congress to significantly invest in our country's infrastructure. However, the President has a history of showing support for something in the morning before turning his back on it in the afternoon. It has happened many times with many different policies over his three years in office, and it happened to us a few years ago -- I was in a meeting with the President where he told me and other Members from New Jersey and New York that he supported funding for the Gateway Project. Not long after that, due to unrelated policy disagreements, he withdrew his support and left our region out to dry. So, while he says she supports infrastructure this morning, I hope he will remember those words in the afternoon."
