Congressman Adrian Smith (R-NE) released the following statement after Democrats on the House Ways and Means Committee on Wednesday requested the president's tax returns from the IRS.

Statement from Smith:

"I strongly oppose efforts by congressional Democrats to request and release President Trump's tax returns. While the Ways and Means Committee, on which I serve, has the authority to request individual returns, this action cannot be construed as part of any legitimate investigation and is therefore an abuse of power."
