Torres Small Leads Bill to Help the Unemployed Get Back to Work

Location: Washington, DC

Yesterday, the bipartisan, BRIDGE for Workers Act (H.R. 1759), was overwhelmingly passed by the House (393 -- 24). Rep. Xochitl Torres Small led the introduction of the BRIDGE for Workers Act with her colleagues Rep. Stephanie Murphy (D-FL), Rep. Jackie Walorski (R-IN), and Rep. Darin LaHood (R-IL). The bill helps unemployed individuals get back to work faster by connecting them with reemployment services earlier in the unemployment process. Studies have shown that the longer someone remains out of work the tougher it becomes to maintain skills, a professional network, and ultimately, find stable employment.

"New Mexico continues to suffer from one of the highest unemployment rates in the country. This issue is personal--after my Dad lost his job, it took years for him to retrain and find his second calling. When hardworking people get the help they need to find a job, we all succeed," said Torres Small after the bill's passage. "This bill will help to connect those out of work with the critical resources and services they need to help find employment faster. This is my first bill to pass the House and I encourage my colleagues in the Senate to support this legislation and help unemployed Americans across the nation get back on their feet."
