Newhouse Statement on Partisan VAWA Changes

Today, Representative Dan Newhouse (R-WA) released the following statement on voting against controversial changes made to the H.R. 1585, Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act of 2019.

"Passing reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act should have been a bipartisan process as it has been in the past, which is why I am disappointed that Democrats refused to work with Republicans and even inserted new provisions that raise serious constitutional due process concerns," said Rep. Newhouse. "Based on those concerns as well as new housing mandates that would discourage participation in federal programs and reduce housing access in rural areas for victims, I could not support the revised, partisan version of VAWA. I have voted several times to reauthorize and fund VAWA, and I have cosponsored my colleague Rep. Elise Stefanik's (R-NY) bill to reintroduce a bipartisan, one-year extension of VAWA so that we can come together to safeguard victims of domestic violence."
