Hoyer: The American People Deserve a Federal Government that Works Efficiently and Effectively For Them

Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) released the following statement following reports that President Trump has sought to eliminate the Office of Personnel Management:

"Reports that the President wants to eliminate the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) are extremely concerning. For two years, President Trump and Congressional Republicans have sought to undermine our hardworking federal civilian workforce through harmful executive orders, cuts to retirement benefits, and pay freezes. As the federal government's human resources department, OPM ensures that we are hiring and retaining talented Americans to serve the public and that federal employees receive the benefits to which they are entitled as well as training. Dismantling this critical office would further undermine morale and make it more difficult for the federal government to serve the American people.

"Earlier this month, I joined with my colleagues in sending a letter to the House Appropriations Committee urging the Committee to deny funds for the implementation of a plan to dismantle OPM. The American people deserve a federal government that works efficiently and effectively for them. I strongly urge the President to reconsider this decision."
