Rep. Johnson Releases New Data Showing Devastating Impacts of President's Emergency Declaration on Georgia Military Construction

Today, Rep. Hank Johnson (GA-04) released new Defense Department data revealing the dire impacts of the President's unlawful emergency declaration on Georgia military families and communities. According to this new data, the President's declaration threatens to siphon $260 million of urgently needed Georgia Department of Defense military construction funds critical to the security of our nation and the well-being of our men and women in uniform and military families.

"The House and the Senate resoundingly rejected the President's emergency declaration, which was a desperate power grab that violates the Constitution and hurts Georgia families," said Rep. Johnson. "Yet, the President has brazenly chosen to defy the Congress and the will of the American people with his veto, which puts the security, stability and well-being of Georgia military families and communities on the chopping block. I am proud to take action to block this terrible decision, and fight to protect Georgians from the drastic consequences of this dangerous, unlawful declaration."

On March 26, Rep. Johnson will join colleagues on both sides of the aisle by voting to override the President's veto. Earlier this month, the House and Senate both voted overwhelmingly to terminate the emergency declaration under the authority provided in the National Emergencies Act (NEA).

The President's emergency declaration undermines the training, readiness and quality of life of our military and their families by potentially targeting high-priority construction initiatives in Georgia.

According to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution: "Funding for more than a half-dozen Army, Navy and Air Force projects from Albany to Augusta could be affected. That includes $99 million for a cyber instructional facility at Fort Gordon, nearly $31 million for a hangar at Moody Air Force base and more than $75 million for a combat vehicle warehouse and body repair shop at Albany's Marine Corps Logistics Base."
