Rep. Ratcliffe leads the charge against Washington's spending problem

Rep. John Ratcliffe (R-Texas) introduced new legislation (H.J. Res. 51) to tackle the $22 trillion national debt following President Trump's annual budget request to Congress last week. Ratcliffe's balanced budget amendment would withhold pay from members of Congress and the president, if they fail to balance the federal budget each year.

"It's baffling to me that Democrats can watch our national debt hit $22 trillion and continue pushing forward with the costliest legislative proposals we've seen in history -- like the Green New Deal or Medicare-for-All. This makes it more evident than ever that the only way to get Washington's spending problem under control is by holding lawmakers' feet to the fire," Ratcliffe said.

"By withholding pay from members of Congress and the president, if they fail to pass and submit balanced budgets each year, my bill effectively forces lawmakers to rein in their reckless spending. We've already seen what happens when we allow this problem to go unchecked: our debt continues to grow. It's time to finally crack down on those who think it's acceptable to dance on the taxpayers' dime."
