Today, Rep. Phil Roe, M.D. (R-Tenn.) released the following statement after voting against H.R. 1, a sweeping bill to federalize our election system, limit the free speech of certain citizens and provide billions of taxpayer funds for campaigns:

"In my 10 years in Congress, this is among the worst pieces of legislation on which I have voted. I believe there are reasonable election reforms where both Republicans and Democrats can agree, especially if they were focused on encouraging American citizens to vote; but this bill does not do that. This bill should be called the "For the Politicians Act' because only they will benefit, not the people. This bill would upend our elections by allowing politicians to receive taxpayer dollars to fund their campaigns; it would take election oversight away from states and communities instead giving it to the federal government; it would weaken the integrity of our elections; and it limits free speech. Taxpayers should not be forced to subsidize politicians, East Tennesseans already do a fine job running our elections. I proudly voted against this legislation in the House and look forward to the Senate rejecting it as well."
