Cummings Issues Statement on Report That President Trump Ordered Approval of Jared Kushner's Security Clearance

Today, Rep. Elijah E. Cummings, the Chairman of the Committee on Oversight and Reform, issued the following statement after the New York Times reported that President Donald Trump pushed for his son-in-law and senior advisor, Jared Kushner, to receive a security clearance despite numerous red flags:

"The security clearance process is supposed to function in an even-handed and neutral manner based on the national security interests of the United States. This latest report indicates that President Trump may have granted access to our country's most sensitive classified information to his son-in-law against the advice of career staff--directly contradicting the President's public denials that he played any role. Our Committee launched a wide-ranging investigation of the White House security clearance process on January 23. In a letter to the White House, I requested specific documents and interviews relating to Mr. Kushner's clearance and a number of others. To date, the White House has not produced a single document or scheduled a single interview. The Committee expects full compliance with its requests as soon as possible, or it may become necessary to consider alternative means to compel compliance."
