LaMalfa Statement on Agreement to Reopen Government

Statement

Date: Jan. 25, 2019
Location: Washington, DC

The President is taking the Democrats at their word. Speaker Pelosi has said she won't negotiate needed border security while the government is shut down. The President is acting in good faith to temporarily reopen the government to alleviate hardships to federal employees, businesses, and citizens to finally bring Democrats to the negotiating table. I will support this short term bill as a means to get funding needed for real long term border security, including physical barriers, increased enforcement and additional immigration judges to expedite legal hearings, as well as get funding back in place for our furloughed workers and critical government operations. The President has offered a reasonable package with some of the exact provisions the Democrats have supported in the past and now are turning down. It is my hope we can come together to solve this problem now."
