McEachin Statement on SCOTUS Decision on Transgender Servicemember Ban

Press Release

Location: Washington, DC

Congressman A. Donald McEachin (VA-04), a member of the Congressional LGBT Equality Caucus and Transgender Equality Task Force, issued this statement following today's decision by the Supreme Court of the United States to allow the Trump Administration's transgender servicemembers ban to go into effect while challenges to the policy continue in lower courts:

"The decision to allow the Trump Administration to proceed with implementation of its discriminatory transgender servicemembers ban is extremely disappointing. This administration's shameful and baseless policy not only insults thousands of transgender individuals currently serving in our armed forces, but also hurts military readiness by denying us the service of brave and skillful patriots. While I remain hopeful that ongoing litigation will prevail and defeat this misguided policy in the courts, Congress must be ready to intervene. As a lawmaker, I will do everything I can to ensure that brave transgender Americans can continue to enlist and serve their nation honorably and with distinction.

"As many as 15,000 transgender individuals currently serve in the U.S. military, and they deserve our utmost respect and gratitude. Unlike our current commander in chief, I will always support and defend the brave members of our military."
