Location: Washington, DC

Congresswoman Doris Matsui (D-CA) released the following statement on the passing of Chairman John Dingell:

"John Dingell was a dear friend to me and my late husband Bob. John was a leader as our distinguished Dean of the House and longstanding Chairman of the powerful Energy and Commerce Committee. Throughout his tenure as the longest serving Member of Congress, John represented the people of southeastern Michigan and all Americans with character, strength, and determination. John was a master legislator who championed universal health care and landmark environmental protection laws including the Safe Drinking Water Act and Clean Air Act. John had great moral courage in his championing for civil rights and the right to vote in this country. It says something special about John that he served in Congress for almost 60 years. And he served with integrity and always a dash of humor. Our nation is a better place thanks to his unwavering spirit, commitment to public service, and transformative leadership. John lived his life to serve our country. There is no doubt that history will remember John Dingell. My thoughts and prayers are with his beloved Debbie and the Dingell family."
