Alexander Statement on Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Statement

U.S. Senator Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) today released the following statement to commemorate the Martin Luther King Jr. federal holiday on Monday, January 21:

"Years ago, when I was a law student, I was a summer intern at the United States Department of Justice. On a hot August day, I went outdoors, and there was a big crowd, and I heard a booming voice -- it was Dr. Martin Luther King making his "I Have a Dream' speech A lot has happened since that day, and a lot of good has happened. I was in Memphis not long ago, and I looked around a room of African American leaders and asked, "If this meeting were held 50 years ago, how many of the positions you hold would be represented at this table today by African Americans?' And the answer very quickly was not one. We have a long ways to go in terms of race relations, but we've made great progress since Dr. King made that speech, and we celebrate his birthday today."
