Congressman Andy Kim (NJ-03) released the following statement after announcing that he has joined the Gun Violence Prevention Task Force and will cosponsor H.R. 8, the Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2019.

"Across the country and in my district, too many people's lives have been destroyed by gun violence. The Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2019 is common-sense, bipartisan legislation that protects the constitutional rights of law abiding citizens while preventing felons, domestic abusers and the dangerously mentally ill from purchasing a firearm," Kim said. "While no single law can stop mass shootings or gun violence, Congress must be willing to set aside partisan politics to offer proactive steps to protect our communities from preventable gun violence.

"Seeing Congressman Steve Scalise (R-LA) and Congresswoman Gabby Giffords (D-AZ) embrace on the House floor last night, the eighth anniversary of her attempted assassination, when 6 others were killed and 15 wounded, was deeply moving. I am pleased to join the Gun Violence Prevention Task Force and cosponsor the Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2019. I look forward to working with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to advance real solutions for the people of New Jersey's Third District."

Gun-related incidents are now the third leading cause of death for American children, with more than 2,700 children and teens shot and killed each year.
