Statement

Date: Dec. 20, 2018
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Rob Wittman (VA-1), Chairman of the House Armed Services Subcommittee on Seapower and Projection Forces, released this statement following Secretary of Defense General James Mattis' retirement announcement.

"General Mattis is a man of utmost character. He has been known as many things, Chaos, the Warrior Monk, Secretary--but chief among them, he has been known as the living embodiment of the Marine Corps motto, Semper Fidelis, "Always Faithful." From enlisting in the Marine Corps Reserve in 1969 to retiring as the Secretary of Defense forty-nine years later, Secretary Jim Mattis has served this great country with honor and distinction. During those 49 years he has always been faithful to his marines, all who have served in uniform, the civilians who have served under him, and most of all his countrymen. As Secretary of Defense, he led the charge to rebuild our military, restore readiness, and project power around the world. His contributions to the United States of America will not be soon forgotten. Thank you, General Mattis, for your service to our nation; you are an exceptional American and a true patriot."
