I am the proud product of a public school education. Specifically, I was able to begin a successful business because of the education that I received in the skilled trades at the Newaygo County Career Tech Center. I want to make sure that this opportunity is available to all students that want it.

The State of Michigan, for too long, has tried to push students into a traditional college setting. While that may be the appropriate path for some students, it is not for all students. It is important that elected officials understand that education must be focused solely on students and policy discussions must deliver outcomes that help our kids.

I am supportive of local control with our school districts. There are many times that policies are written in Washington DC or Lansing that address the needs of only some school districts but come with guidelines and requirements for all districts. We must have faith in and provide support to our local teachers, principals, superintendents and school boards so that they have the flexibility to provide a superior education.

As your State Senator, I will fight for local control for our schools and will work with our local school officials to ensure that we are providing all students with an education that will best prepare them for the future.
