Onward and Upward

Statement

Date: Nov. 9, 2018

Two years ago, I wrote to you after a difficult election that challenged many of our core beliefs about America. On that day, I called for us to remain vigilant and fight for a return to decency and compassion. Thanks to your tireless efforts, we have taken a huge step toward that goal.

Moving forward, the House of Representatives must fulfill our Constitutional role to act as a check and balance on the President. For two years, he has acted with no restraint and no serious challenge in ways that have harmed our economy, our environment, our global standing, our national security, our religious and racial minorities, and our very fundamental values of liberty and justice.

No more.

But our role in the next Congress is not just to check the President. Democrats must deliver for the American people.

In divided government, with the Senate and the presidency in Republican hands, we will stand for our principles, pass bills that will help families, and work with those who are willing to work with us to improve health care, create good jobs, and invest in the future. We have been entrusted with the majority after years of failed Republican control; we're going to use it for good.

First on our list must be holding the President to his promise to enact a transportation infrastructure bill to rebuild and repair our country, bringing justice to our immigration system, and passing budgets and policies that protect working Americans instead of lavishing benefits on the very wealthiest.

We have fights ahead of us, no doubt. But thanks to you, we are armed with new power and new energy that the Democrats can use to show America what government for the people and by the people actually looks like.

Thank you. Let's get to work.
