Letter to Democratic Colleague - Scott Seeks Chairmanship of Education and Labor Committee in 116th Congress

Letter

Date: Nov. 7, 2018
Location: Washington, DC

Dear Democratic Colleague:

Last night was a tremendous victory for House Democrats and the American people. As we prepare our new majority for the 116th Congress, I am writing to seek your support to serve as Chairman of the Committee on Education and the Workforce. I am proud to have served as the Committee's Ranking Member for the past four years, and I look forward to working with you to advance our goals as we enter the Majority.

The American people have spoken and they are looking to our Committee -- which enacts policies that impact the lives of Americans from birth to retirement -- to restore confidence in a government that works For the People! I am committed to upholding the core values of our Democratic Caucus by advancing equity in education, expanding access to affordable health care, ensuring workers have a safe workplace where they can earn decent wages, and conducting rigorous oversight into this Administration's deregulatory agenda.

Although the last two years have forced us to block harmful policies, we must also pursue a proactive agenda that clearly articulates a better, more inclusive vision for our country. As Ranking Member, I have joined with many of you to introduce ambitious and unifying proposals that would significantly improve the lives of people from all backgrounds. Together, we have introduced legislation to free students from the burdens of crippling debt, support workers' access to fair wages, safe workplaces, and a secure retirement, and expand affordable, accessible health care coverage to all Americans.

These proposals not only reflect the values of our Caucus, they have the overwhelming support of the American people.

Last night, the voters granted us the opportunity to advance a vision for a country where everyone can succeed. As Chairman, I will continue to work with you to present meaningful solutions that secure a better future for children, students, workers, and families across the country.

Thank you for your consideration and support.

Sincerely,
