Statement

Date: Nov. 14, 2018
Location: Washington, DC

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.) issued the statement below on President Trump's call on Congress to pass The First Step Act:

"I welcome President Trump's support for the First Step Act, bipartisan and bicameral legislation that will help make our streets safer and give offenders a fair shot at succeeding in society after serving their time. This legislation will help control corrections spending, manage the prison population, and reduce recidivism. Additionally, the First Step Act contains important sentencing reform provisions that will ensure our system works more efficiently and justly, while simultaneously protecting our citizens from violent criminals.

"I also want to thank my House and Senate colleagues and their staffs, particularly Rep. Doug Collins who introduced and shepherded this bill through the House. I look forward to working with all of my colleagues to finalize pass this bill and send it to the President's desk for his signature before the end of this Congress."
