Rep. Jimmy Gomez to President Trump: You Will Not Erase My Transgender Constituents

Statement

Date: Oct. 22, 2018
Location: Los Angeles, CA

In response to the Trump administration's proposed change to the definition of sex under Title IX, U.S. Congressman Jimmy Gomez (CA-34), member of the Congressional LGBT Equality Caucus, released the following statement:

"This proposed change is a direct attack on our government's foremost duty -- to protect the rights of all citizens. Not only does this new and politically-motivated proposal disenfranchise 1.4 million transgender Americans, but it also strategically erodes the civil rights protections achieved during the Obama administration. Unfortunately, no one should be surprised to see this White House ignore the basic scientific facts of sex and gender as well as basic human decency in this matter.

"As a proud member of the Congressional LGBT Equality Caucus, I will not stand idly by as this administration tries to erase my transgender constituents from our society. I call on the White House to abandon this transphobic proposal, and for my congressional colleagues to redouble our efforts to pass meaningful civil rights protections for LGBTQ Americans -- so that no administration can turn back the clock on human rights."
