Congressman Eliot L. Engel issued the following statement:
"Amazon's decision to raise its minimum wage to $15 an hour is welcome and will hopefully spur other corporations to act in a similar manner. As a cosponsor of H.R. 15, the Raise the Wage Act which would make the federal minimum wage $15 an hour, I believe the American workforce is long overdue for this type of pay increase. Corporate profits are at record highs, but the average worker is not feeling the economic prosperity. Employees of trillion dollar corporations should not have to rely on food stamps, plain and simple.
"I was also pleased to hear that in addition to raising their wages, Amazon has promised to advocate for the federal minimum wage increase we are fighting for in Congress. Their substantial voice should carry great weight in that discussion. We need a titanic shift in how large corporations view their workforce, from employee wages to work conditions. Though it is far too early to tell if this maneuver by one of the planet's biggest corporations fits that description, it is encouraging."
