Congressman Tim Ryan (D-OH) announced Social Security benefits will increase by 2.8 percent in 2019. The 2.8 percent cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) will begin with benefits payable to more than 62 million Social Security beneficiaries in January 2019. Increased payments to more than 8 million SSI beneficiaries will begin on December 31, 2018. The Social Security Act ties the annual COLA to the increase in the Consumer Price Index as determined by the Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics.

"Social Security is one of our most important social programs, having helped millions of seniors, people with disabilities, and survivors make ends meet. This 2.8 percent increase is great news and will benefit the 62 million people who rely on this crucial program and are facing increasing cost of living," said Congressman Ryan. "Protecting and expanding Social Security continues to be one of my top priorities, and I remain committed to stopping those who seek to make cuts to this critical program."
