Hoyer: Today Has Exposed What a Sham This Supreme Court Confirmation Process Is

Statement

House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today as Republican leaders made it clear the Senate would move forward with Brett Kavanaugh's Supreme Court nomination in spite of an incomplete FBI investigation into claims of sexual assault:

"Today has exposed what a sham this Supreme Court confirmation process is. The fact that the so-called FBI "investigation' failed to interview either of the principals undermines the notion that it was either thorough or serious.

"Further, the hypocrisy of the Republican leaders in the U.S. Senate is almost incomprehensible. Leader McConnell talks of "moving' the goal post, but he fails to acknowledge that he removed the goal post with respect to Merrick Garland. The Chairman of the Judiciary Committee bemoaned that 'this is the 87th day' of this nomination, but he fails to acknowledge that Merrick Garland's nomination was left pending for 293 days without a single hearing.

"Republicans should admit that they no longer care whether an individual has the temperament or the impartiality that should be the hallmark of a Supreme Court Justice. It is clear that achieving their political ends is their sole objective."
