Hoyer Statement on House Passage of the GOP Tax Scam 2.0

Statement

House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after House Republicans passed the GOP tax scam 2.0:

"In December, Republicans perpetrated one of the largest scams in history on American workers and small-business owners when they rammed through Congress a tax overhaul that raised deficits by $1.8 trillion and gave 83% of its benefits to the wealthiest 1% in the country. Most egregiously, they raised taxes on millions of middle-class families. The American people, however, saw right through the Republican rhetoric and know that law for what it is, which is why it's proven so unpopular.

"Republicans are now doubling down on more of the same tax cuts for the wealthy at the expense of the middle class. Their legislation will add an additional $3.2 trillion to the deficit over the first ten years it takes effect, putting our children and grandchildren further into debt. Republicans know that it cannot possibly pay for itself -- a fact the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office and every credible outside analysis affirms. In fact, they are already using the high debt their first tax scam incurred to demand harsh cuts to Social Security and Medicare.

"This bill was wrong the first time around last December, and it is wrong again now."
