Rosen Statement on the Trump Administration Revoking the Flores Agreement

Statement

Location: Washington, DC

Today, Congresswoman Jacky Rosen (NV-03) released the following statement following news reports that the Trump Administration plans to revoke the Flores Settlement Agreement, a court case that governs how migrant children are treated while in U.S. custody.

"It's been more than a month since the Trump Administration failed to meet a court-ordered deadline to reunite hundreds of children who are experiencing unspeakable trauma and are suffering as a result of this cruel policy," said Rosen. "Now this Administration is choosing to take away a key protection by revoking the Flores Agreement, allowing children to be indefinitely detained with their families like criminals during a legal process that can take years. This latest move by the Administration is unconscionable, and I will continue to push for these separated families to be reunited and fight against this Administration's heartless immigration agenda."

BACKGROUND: Rosen is an original co-sponsor of the Keep Families Together Act (H.R. 6135), which would prohibit the separation of children from their detainee parents, without violating the Flores Settlement. She is also a co-sponsor of the Mental Health Care for Children Inhumanely Separated from Parents by the Federal Government Act (H.R. 6180), which would provide ongoing mental healthcare for separated children free-of-charge, even after release and reunification with their family, as long as is deemed medically necessary or until a parent opts out on the child's behalf.

Last month, Rosen led a letter to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) demanding an immediate investigation into the reported death of a toddler after being released from the South Texas Residential Center, an ICE facility in Dilley, Texas.

In June, Rosen toured the Tornillo detention facility in Texas, the site of a tent city holding unaccompanied immigrant children and children who were separated from their parents.
