Congressman Lujan Statement on Trump Administration's Methane Rule Roll Back

Statement

Date: Sept. 11, 2018
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Ben Ray Luján (D-NM) condemned today's announcement from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that the agency is planning to roll back the Obama-era methane emissions standards for the oil and gas industry:

"The Trump administration's rollback of commonsense rules on flaring, venting, and leaking methane is bad for the health and economic well-being of New Mexicans. In New Mexico alone, it is estimated that the oil and gas industry emits 570,000 tons of methane per year, which costs our state $27 million a year in lost revenue. We should be focusing on working together, not rolling back important public health and environmental safeguards."
