Congressman Norman Applauds ITC Decision to Protect Paper Producers

Press Release

Date: Sept. 5, 2018
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Trade

Congressman Ralph Norman (SC-05) praises the recent decision of the U.S International Trade Commission (ITC) to lift tariffs on uncoated groundwood paper from Canada, which is a common ingredient component in newspapers.

In December 2017, Congressman Norman headed a letter, signed by a bipartisan group of 33 Members of Congress, to U.S. Department of Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross, asking him to consider the implications of government intervention on U.S. newspaper and commercial printing industries.

Then on July 17, 2018, Congressman Norman testified before the ITC urging them for the removal of these tariffs.

Following the news of the ITC's decision in this case, Congressman Norman has released the following statement:

"I am extremely pleased to see the ITC's decision on lifting these burdensome tariffs. If these tariffs had remained in place, over 600,000 jobs across the country, would have been put at risk or affected.

"Not only would this have affected jobs, but would have crippled all newspapers - big and small. Small newspapers would have been threatened to be put out of business, essentially cutting off rural and small-town America from their local news.

"The ITC clearly saw the ramifications this could have had on paper producers and newspapers across the country, and for that I applaud them."
