Date: Sept. 5, 2018
Location: Washington, DC

Today, Rep. Mimi Walters (R-California) released the following statement following the Energy and Commerce Committee's hearing on Twitter transparency and accountability. Media reports have revealed that live streaming services like Twitter's Periscope platform have been used to sexually exploit children as young as nine years old. In light of these reports, Rep. Walters questioned Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey about his company's actions to put an end to these crimes. Watch Rep. Walters' questioning of Mr. Dorsey below.

Said Congresswoman Walters, "Periscope, one of the Internet's most popular video platforms, has been used to sexually exploit children. We have a shared responsibility to protect our children and these illegal and repugnant activities must stop now. While Twitter has stated a zero tolerance policy for child exploitation, its existing efforts to monitor and prevent this crime are unacceptable. I will continue to put pressure on Twitter to ensure it takes immediate action to put an end to the use of its platforms for child exploitation of any kind."
