Today marks the beginning of Startup Week Across America. This week, a bipartisan coalition of House members will draw attention to the important role startups play in our economy and how we can help support their efforts to grow and succeed.

In 2015, startup firms created 2.5 million jobs, roughly 15 percent of all new job creation that year. In 2017, startups represented almost 9.5 percent of all private sector firms in the United States. Firms less than a year old and with 10 or fewer employees created 1.9 million jobs and more than half of these jobs were created by firms with four employees or less.

"Startups play an important role in the strength of our economy and the everyday lives of people all across our country. They are responsible for the creation of millions of new jobs, and it is Congress' job to help create an environment that affords everyone the opportunity to develop an idea and see it through to success. Giving these entrepreneurs the tools to succeed will result in groundbreaking achievements and ensure the U.S. remains committed to fostering a healthy startup ecosystem," said Rep. Suzan DelBene (D-WA).

"Small businesses are the engine of job growth in this country, and entrepreneurship provides the spark and fuel for them," said Rep. Randy Hultgren (IL-14). "The fabric of our nation is literally woven with the ambition and hope of entrepreneurship and the recognition that anyone, from any background, can innovate, persevere and build a business. Our nation is built upon such ideals, and they are worth cherishing and advancing."

"Startup Week Across America is a great opportunity for Members of Congress to recognize the innovative and economic contributions of startups in our communities," said Congressman Jerry McNerney (CA-09). "This week, I'll be visiting HATCH Workshop, a startup in Stockton, California that provides training and education in fine crafts, design, and entrepreneurship, in addition to offering affordable housing, workspaces and workshop access. This startup is expanding its impact by offering other startups and entrepreneurs the tools and resources needed to get their businesses off the ground. It's a great example for why we must continue to foster startup opportunities and support policies that help turn innovative, unique ideas into America's next great business venture."

"Startups across America grow our economy, create jobs, and transform the global marketplace. American entrepreneurs play a vital role in our Nation's future economic success and as lawmakers, we must understand the economic benefits startups create. Startup Week Across America is a great opportunity to connect with local entrepreneurs and highlight their contributions to our communities," said Rep. Mimi Walters (R-CA).

"Small businesses and startups are the lifeblood and backbone of Brooklyn. They play a pivotal role in the strength and wellness of our local economy and our community as a whole. Brooklyn entrepreneurs are emerging as leaders in nearly every industry, from retail and healthcare, to telecom and tech, to education. As a member of the Small Business Committee, I recognize my role in helping to foster an environment that makes it easier for any entrepreneur with an idea to build a business. I'm proud to be a Co-Chair of this year's "Startup Day Across America". This bipartisan effort is good for Brooklyn and good for America," said Rep. Yvette Clarke (D-NY).

"With exciting new technologies hitting the market and a continued increase in innovation, American entrepreneurs are creating startup companies that are thriving in the Internet of Things era and are contributing to our nation's overall economic success," said Rep. Susan W. Brooks (R-IN). "Startups challenge the status quo by using technology to solve problems and create innovative products and services in industries ranging from health care to education, entertainment and more. As new startups are launched, we are seeing more job and career opportunities for people across the country. These dynamic companies act as entrepreneurial leaders, innovators, and job creators within our communities and it is Congress' responsibility to ensure they can work in an environment that encourages success and growth. I am proud to represent the local startup community in Indiana's Fifth District and remain committed to providing them with the resources needed to succeed."
