Statement from Governor Andrew M. Cuomo on the Board of Elections Advancing Regulations For Nation-Leading Online Transparency Laws

Statement

Date: Aug. 10, 2018
Location: Albany, NY
Issues: Elections

"While President Trump and our federal government ignore the grave threat of foreign interference in our elections, New York is leading the fight to protect our democracy. This year we passed the strongest online transparency laws in the country to ensure foreign entities are not using social media to influence our elections, and these laws are now serving as a model for other states to follow. Last week, in the face of new reports of election meddling on Facebook, I called on the Board of Elections to issue the strongest possible regulations as it defined online platforms and created a database of all political ads purchased on the platforms.

"The Board of Elections heeded my call and advanced aggressive regulations to fully enforce our nation-leading online political transparency laws. Elections are the backbone of our democracy, and our critical legislation will protect voters and ensure that social media sites used to spread misinformation will be held accountable."
