Issue Position: Protecting Health Care

Issue Position

Date: Jan. 1, 2018

President Trump and Republicans in Congress are determined to undo all of the progress we've made under the Affordable Care Act. Congressman Connolly was proud to vote for the ACA in 2010. Thanks to the ACA, the uninsured rate was plummeting, patients with pre-existing conditions could no longer be denied coverage, and premiums were stabilizing. Under President Trump, we've seen constant threats to end coverage for pre-existing conditions, a return to double-digit premium increases, and an increase in the uninsured rate.

Virginia's uninsured rate decreased more than 30% since passage of the ACA, and this legislation has allowed for more young adults to have health insurance through reliable coverage from their parents and guardian's health care until the age of 26. Congressman Connolly knows the unfortunate dangers of repealing the ACA, which is currently protecting 3 million Virginians. Congressman Connolly supported Medicaid expansion in Virginia, which after a six-year battle, finally passed this year giving 400,000 Virginians health care.

In Congress, he has been a strong advocate for continuing bipartisan efforts to improve the Affordable Care Act and finding practical healthcare solutions for American families. He will continue to oppose efforts to repeal the Affordable Care Act and Republican's attempts to weaken coverage for people with pre-existing conditions, increase premiums for all Americans, and deny health care access to millions of our fellow citizens.

Congressman Connolly has championed the fight to not only protect the Affordable Care Act, but also to protect the Federal Employee Health Benefits program, expanding scientific research and development, and fix the Veterans Affairs system. In addition to advocating for more funding in the Department of Veterans Affairs Office, he has sought to continue funding vital programs such as the National Institutes of Health, Breast Cancer Research, and the Children's Health Insurance Program. Gerry Connolly will always stand strong to protect health care for all Americans.
