Statement By Congressman Brian Higgins On On Canadian Newsprint Tariffs Reduction

Statement

Date: Aug. 7, 2018
Issues: Trade

Congressman Brian Higgins released the following statement regarding the Commerce Department's reduction of Candian Newsprint tariffs:

"The tariffs imposed on Canadian Newsprint by the US Commerce Department have already had a negative impact on local newspapers in New York and across the country. While the decision by the Commerce Department to lower the maximum tariffs from 32% to just over 20% represents a small move in the right direction, it does not go far enough to ease the burden the newspaper industry is facing.

70% of those surveyed reported to the News Media Alliance earlier this year that they had already cut their news coverage to help make up for the additional supply costs imposed by these tariffs.

That is why I continue to urge the International Trade Commission to reevaluate the damage these tariffs are causing and hope to see them reverse the application of them when they issue a final decision in this case."
