Governor Joins Waipahu Tower Residents at Grand Re-Opening of 62 Refurbished Affordable Rental Units

Gov. David Ige joined families in Waipahu for the grand re-opening of Waipahu Tower -- an affordable rental apartment complex that was refurbished through a public-private partnership between the State of Hawai"i and the Ahe Group.

The affordable housing developer secured financing and affordable housing tax credits from the Hawai"i Housing Finance and Development Corporation (HHFDC) to finance $17.7 million for the acquisition and rehabilitation of Waipahu Tower's 64 units -- 62 of which are affordable rentals.

"Preserving our affordable rentals is just as important as building them from the ground up. This project ensures that the 62 affordable units at Waipahu Tower are up to code, livable, and will remain affordable for the next 60 years. This project is especially important as we invest in affordable housing along the rail route," said Gov. Ige. "When I took office, building and renovation affordable units had slowed to a trickle. We are now riding a wave of momentum and will be breaking ground on two more affordable housing projects this month."

According to the latest HHFDC Housing Production Report, about 5,400 new homes have been completed statewide since Gov. Ige took office in 2014. That includes 3,308 affordable units, of which 659 are refurbished units. About 2,400 units are under construction and about 4,500 units are in the planning phases.
