Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee Demands Congressional Investigations Following the President's Decision to Deploy the National Guard to the U.S. - Mexico Border

Statement

Date: June 15, 2018
Location: Washington, DC

Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, senior Member of the House Committees on Budget, Judiciary and Homeland Security, and former Ranking Member of the Border and Maritime Security Subcommittee, released the following statement on the president's decision to deploy the National Guard to the U.S.-Mexico border:

"The decision by the White House and the Department of Homeland Security to deploy the National Guard to our U.S.-Mexico border is a solution in search of a problem, and a reckless misuse of federal resources that will not make our nation any safer. More than likely, the President's decision to deploy the National Guard was fueled by the same animus and xenophobia that have driven his public comments on this issue for many, many years, and to distract attention from the fact that he has been advised by the Special Counsel that he is a subject of the Russia investigation.

"At the end of the day, this act hurts our relationship with one of our closest allies and strongest trading partners, and vilifies an entire segment of the population. I am concerned that this rash decision was done without consultation of the Congress and I urge the Chairman and Ranking Member of the Homeland Security Committee to hold hearings on this matter"
