Governor Announces Funds for Substance Abuse Treatment

Two state agencies receive Federal Residential Substance Abuse Treatment grants

Treatment can provide many individuals a second chance, Governor Kathleen Sebelius said in announcing that two state agencies have received funds to go toward substance abuse treatment.

"If we are going to continue to have safe communities, we must ensure that adult and juvenile offenders are not released without having received treatment for substance abuse. Otherwise, they're much more likely to commit additional crimes," said Governor Sebelius.

The grants, totaling over $300,000, were awarded by the Federal Residential Substance Abuse Treatment (RSAT) grant program to the Kansas Department of Corrections and the Kansas Juvenile Justice Authority's residential substance abuse treatment programs. The Department of Corrections received $154,328 to support its Therapeutic Community for inmates at Osawatomie Correctional Facility and the transitional therapeutic program at Topeka. The Juvenile Justice Authority received $154,328 to fund its Larned Juvenile Correctional Facility's treatment program which provides substance abuse treatment for male juveniles.

The Kansas Criminal Justice Coordinating Council (KCJCC) oversees the criminal justice federal funding made available to Kansas through the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Justice Programs, and Bureau of Justice Assistance.
