Hastings' Statement on Nelson Mandela International Day

Press Release

Congressman Alcee L. Hastings (D-FL) made the following statement in recognition of Nelson Mandela International Day 2018, which also marks Nelson Mandela's 100th birthday:

"In South Africa, they have a term, Ubuntu, which means "I am because we are.' The philosophy of Ubuntu, an interconnected and shared humanity across the globe is something that Nelson Mandela stressed every day of his life. As we commemorate Nelson Mandela International Day, we are encouraged to reflect on this shared humanity and remember the legacy of Nelson Mandela around the world.

"A commanding advocate for equal rights and opportunities, Nelson Mandela led the charge against institutional racism and discrimination in South Africa, fighting apartheid and fostering an era of peace and reconciliation. Truly, the name Nelson Mandela has become synonymous with peace, justice, and the most steadfast perseverance.

"I am a proud original co-sponsor of H.Res.455, introduced by my colleague Congressman John Lewis, urging all Americans to reflect on peace, tolerance, democracy, human rights, and reconciliation on this day.

"Nelson Mandela believed that we are only people through other people, that community is one of the building blocks of society. More than 20 years after his release from prison and tenure as President of South Africa, Nelson Mandela's wisdom, work, and legacy continues to inspire people across the globe."
