Hastings' Statement on the Supreme Court's Decision in Janus v. AFSCME

Statement

Date: June 27, 2018
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Alcee L. Hastings (D-FL) released the following statement after the Supreme Court handed down a 5-4 decision in the case of Janus v. AFSCME Council 31:

"Today, the Supreme Court overturned four decades of precedent. This decision will undermine the basic rights of more than 17 million public-sector workers, which will impact good paying jobs, wages, healthcare, retirement, and workplace conditions for hardworking Americans all across our nation.

"The men and women of the labor movement are the backbone of our country. This blatant attack on unions is just another example of conservatives looking to hand out more tax cuts for the rich. I find this to be absolutely shameful!

"I will never stop defending the right of our brothers and sisters in labor to defend their freedom to stand together and negotiate for fair working conditions."

Congressman Alcee L. Hastings serves as Senior Member of the House Rules Committee, Ranking Democratic Member of the U.S. Helsinki Commission, and Co-Chairman of the Florida Delegation.
