Hastings' Statement on LGBTQ Pride Month

Statement

Today, Congressman Alcee L. Hastings (D-FL) released the following statement marking LGBTQ Pride Month:

"The month of June marks LGBTQ Pride Month and the 49th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots. I am proud to celebrate the LGBTQ community and those individuals who continue to promote equality. I have spent my career advocating for equal rights for all Americans, and I have a 100 percent pro-equality voting record regarding legislation affecting the LGBTQ community.

"As we approach the second anniversary of the PULSE nightclub shooting, I will continue to fight for our LGBTQ friends. Members of this community are still denied equal opportunity and are often disregarded by the Trump administration and some of my Republican colleagues. We must ensure that we protect LGBTQ Americans as they pursue the ideals we all hold dear.

"Throughout this Pride Month, we must recognize the progress we have made while acknowledging the steps we still must take toward a more inclusive and free society. This nation only truly thrives when every community within it is respected and given equal protection under the law. I am proud to stand with the LGBTQ community."
