Remembering the Congressional Baseball Shooting

Statement

Date: June 14, 2018

Today, Rep. Val Demings (FL-10) made the following statement on the Congressional Baseball Shooting, which took place one year ago today. Four people were shot, including House Majority Whip Steve Scalise and Capitol Police Officer Crystal Griner, and two others injured.

Said Rep. Demings, "The Congressional Baseball game is one of Washington's bastions of bipartisanship and comradery, a chance for people from both sides of the aisle to come together and raise money for charity. I remain thankful that no innocent people were killed, and proud of the heroism showed by Members, staff, and Capitol and Alexandria Police, especially Capitol Police Special Agents David Bailey and Crystal Griner, and Alexandria Police Officers Nicole Battaglia, Alexander Jensen and Kevin Jobe. Their actions saved lives.

"I know that the attack only strengthened the resolve of my friends and colleagues in Congress to get back on the field. I hope, one year later, that we can begin to show the same bipartisan unity on the issue of gun violence. Americans agree on common-sense reforms to keep guns out of the wrong hands."
