Faso Statement on Gov. Cuomo's Criticism of Improvements to the SNAP Program

Location: Washington, DC

Congressman John Faso (R-Kinderhook) released a statement in response to Gov. Cuomo's criticism of improvements to the SNAP program:

"Cynthia Nixon has caused Andrew Cuomo to become unhinged. His criticism of enhanced work requirements for the SNAP program - while at the same time increasing the ability of a food stamp household to own a safe car and maintain a small savings account -- show that this Governor prefers divisive rhetoric over governing.

"Fraud is a small part of the SNAP program; but over $600 million in taxpayer money is lost each year due to fraud and abuse. That might not seem like a lot of money to Andrew Cuomo, who has made a career out of wasting taxpayer dollars, but families throughout Upstate New York realize it is. What we have now are work rules for able-bodied adults without small children at home that are often ignored. Our reforms will provide resources to states to get eligible people into employment and training programs. A job is much better than dependency on government. Cuomo doesn't get it, but taxpayers routinely see government programs abused by those taking advantage of the system, while they struggle to make ends meet.

"The proposed improvements to SNAP are designed to accomplish one thing: to help give people the tools and incentives to lift themselves out of the endless cycle of poverty.

"Andrew Cuomo's baseless attack on me is another sad example of his failed governance of our State."
