Luján Statement on LGBTQ+ Pride Month

Statement

Date: June 13, 2018
Location: Santa Fe, NM

Congressman Ben Ray Luján (D-NM) released the following statement today in recognition of LGBTQ+ Pride Month, which is observed during the month of June:

"Every year during Pride Month, we pay tribute to the courageous individuals who paved the way for the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement. This weekend, thanks to their enduring work, LGBTQ+ New Mexicans and their allies will march through the streets of Albuquerque to publicly recognize lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender individuals' contributions to our state, nation, and world.

"The movement that began almost fifty years ago at the Stonewall Inn has led to the end of "don't ask, don't tell,' the historic 2015 Supreme Court decision on marriage equality, and the breaking down of so many barriers for LGBTQ+ Americans.

"This Pride Month, we also recognize that the path forward remains long. I have been disappointed by President Trump's actions to end protections for LGBTQ+ students, ban transgender service members from the armed forces, and abandon his promises to the LGBTQ+ community.

"I remain committed to standing with our LGBTQ+ friends and neighbors against this onslaught to ensure that every person -- man or women, gay or straight -- is treated with dignity and respect, no matter who they love."
