Shea-Porter Statement on Release of PFAS Toxicology Report

Statement

Date: June 20, 2018
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Environment

Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter (NH-01) today released the following statement on the release of the ATSDR PFAS chemicals toxicology report, which, for months, has been blocked from public release due to pressure from the EPA and Trump political appointees:

"It's about time. Granite State communities are living with constant questions about the safety of their drinking water, and this report will help us better understand the health risks of PFAS chemicals. It was outrageous, and a violation of the trust we place in our public officials, that for months, the administration held back publication of this report. I am pleased that it has finally been released. I will continue working in the House with Members of both parties to advance research into PFAS chemicals and their health impacts. This issue is impacting communities across the country, and I am leading a bipartisan coalition of Members in the House who are concerned and are taking action."

BACKGROUND:

Shea-Porter issued a blistering statement in May after Politico reported that the EPA and White House had been blocking the release of the report and pointed to a "public relations nightmare" as the reason. Shea-Porter sent a letter to Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Trey Gowdy, requesting a hearing and investigation into EPA and White House actions to block the release of this report.

In May, Shea-Porter introduced the PFAS Registry Act in the House. She successfully included language in the House NDAA Report to lessen the use of PFC-based fire fighting foam.
