Stand Strong Under This Administration

This month is the 49th LGBTQ+ Pride Month. This year, perhaps more than ever, we're reminded why we need to maintain our ground and stand united in the fight for equality.

The nature of the Supreme Court is changing dramatically with the retirement of Justice Kennedy. I'm sounding the alarm: we will all have to defend the progress we've made, fight for equality, and be vocal allies for our LGBTQ+ friends and neighbors.

This Pride Month alone, we saw the Supreme Court side with a baker who refused to make a cake for a same-sex wedding, opening the door for future discrimination against the LGBTQ+ community.

The Trump administration and their allies -- always looking to roll back the clock on protections for communities that don't fall in line with their agenda -- are celebrating the ruling.

In fact, the White House went one step further, refusing to even acknowledge Pride Month at all.

I will not stand by while the Trump administration tries to push the LGBTQ+ community back into the shadows. I've fought on the side of equal rights and equality for a long time and will continue to stand strong under this administration.

In 1996, I was only one of 67 Members of the House to vote against the so-called Defense of Marriage Act. In 2015, when marriage equality was finally achieved, I was proud to sign an amicus brief supporting marriage equality along with 210 of my colleagues in Congress. I'm a co-sponsor of the Equality Act, which would expand the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to prohibit discrimination on the bases of sexual orientation and gender identity.

I stand with our LGBTQ+ neighbors, and I will continue to fight for equal treatment for all Americans.
